Day One – November 6
Morning Session (Lindbergh 1/2/3)
08.15 – 09.30 | Registration and light buffet breakfast sponsored by Air bp |
09.30 – 09.40 | Welcome & Announcements |
09.40 – 10.25 | Session 1 (Panel): Aviation leadership – Driving the energy transformation
The aviation industry has set a target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, which will require a massive transformation away from the use of fossil fuels towards drop-in sustainable aviation fuels and new propulsion technologies using renewable resources. How are airlines around the world and the business aviation sector preparing for this huge challenge and what support will they require? Jonathon Counsell, Group Head of Sustainability, International Airlines Group Milena Fajardo, Head of Environment & Sustainability, Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) Maureen Gautier, Sustainability & Future Workforce Manager, European Business Aviation Association Kevin Welsh, Vice President, Environmental Affairs & Chief Sustainability Officer, Airlines for America Moderator: Nancy Young, Chief Sustainability Officer, Gevo |
10.25 – 10.50 | Session 2 (Presentation): Introducing the IATA EcoHub
Launched in September, IATA’s EcoHub combines essential support modules that will help airlines to navigate CORSIA, passenger emissions and Net Zero tracking, and supports SAF accounting and claiming. This presentation will demonstrate how the different modules interact with each other and offer airlines help with their decarbonization journey. The EcoHub is expected to become the central place for all IATA sustainability tools, offering an industry best practices approach while fostering standardization with regard to environmental data and reporting. Michael Schneider, Assistant Director, Environmental Programs, International Air Transport Association |
10.50 – 11.20 | Networking and Refreshment Break sponsored by ETS.aero |
11.20 – 11.50 | Session 3 (Presentation): Financing the sustainability transition
As airlines simultaneously focus on recovering earnings and balance sheets, decarbonizing their operations is an increasingly pressing priority as the cost of emitting carbon rises. We assess progress to date, the sector’s capacity to fund fleet renewal over the long-term in a higher interest rate environment, and the potential impact on market structures from divergent airline performances. Neil Glynn, Managing Director, AIR Control Tower |
11.50 – 12.30 | Session 4 (Panel): Low-cost & regional airline approach to the energy transition
How are carriers from outside the world of network players shaping their decarbonization strategies? This session will discuss the challenges faced by carriers with predominantly short-haul networks in Europe as they decarbonize at pace and cost to ensure their business models remain intact and regional communities, for whom air travel is vital for their survival, can remain connected. Lahiru Ranasinghe, Senior Sustainability Manager, easyJet Andy Smith, Head of Sustainability Strategy, Loganair Antoine Toulemont, Sustainability & Policy Advisor, European Regions Airline Association Moderator: Mark Pilling, Aviation journalist |
12.30 – 13.00 | Keynote Speech:
Baroness Vere of Norbiton, UK Minister for Aviation |
13.00 – 14.30 | Networking and Buffet Lunch sponsored by Airbus |
Afternoon Breakout Sessions
Stream: Lindbergh 3 – SAF Policy & Investment
14.30 – 15.15 | Session 5 (Panel): SAF Book & Claim
Book & Claim provides a promising solution to expand the use of SAF in the industry, providing emission reductions for both airlines and their corporate customers. However, it relies on a robust, consistent and transparent approach for tracing the physical and attributes for direct users and stakeholders across that value chain. This session looks at the emerging SAF certificate market and registries. István Bart, Director – Global Climate, Environmental Defense Fund Max Eichelbaum, Digital Solutions Manager, Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials Nicole Sautter, Senior Manager Global Sustainability, American Express Global Business Travel Michael Schneider, Assistant Director, Environmental Programs, International Air Transport Association Moderator: Nancy Bsales, Chief Operating Officer, Sustainability, 4AIR |
15.15 – 16.00 | Session 6 (Panel): Latest developments on SAF mandates in the EU and UK
Adopted in October, the ReFuel Aviation regulation, part of the EU’s Fit for 55 package, places an obligation on aviation fuel suppliers to supply a minimum share of SAF at EU airports from 2025. The UK is currently consulting on a similar measure. This session will unpack the two mandates, the differences between them and how they will impact SAF suppliers and aircraft operators in Europe. Tom Berg, Senior Policy & Sustainability Manager, SkyNRG Jonathon Counsell, Group Head of Sustainability, International Airlines Group and UK Jet Zero Council SAF Delivery Group Chair Laurent Donceel, Deputy Managing Director, Airlines for Europe Matt Finch, UK Aviation Manager, Transport & Environment Hazel Schofield, Deputy Head of Low Carbon Fuels, UK Department for Transport Moderator: Giulia Squadrin, Associate Editor, Biofuels, Argus Media |
16.00 – 16.30 | Networking and Refreshment Break sponsored by 4AIR |
16.30 – 17.00 | Session 7 (Presentation): Key levers to meeting the demand for SAF
The aviation energy transition will rely heavily on scaling SAF, so what are the key levers that will help the industry meet heightening demand? This presentation will also look at the role of co-processing in the transition and discuss feedstock flexibility. Sven Rieve, Sustainability Manager, Air bp |
17.00 – 17.45 | Session 8 (Panel): E-kerosene and green hydrogen – the long-term future of aviation fuels?
Produced by combining hydrogen generated by renewable electricity and sustainable carbon dioxide, synthetic kerosene – also called e-kerosene, e-SAF or power-to-liquid (PtL) – has huge potential to slash aviation’s carbon footprint. However, it faces major challenges, not least price and competition from other sectors. How can aviation secure a share of this promising carbon-neutral fuel? Nanna Baldvinsdóttir, CEO, IdunnH2 Heida Gudbrandsdóttir, Deputy COO, Icelandair Keith Lawless, Vice President, Renewable Aviation, SAF+ Consortium Aoife O’Leary, CEO, Opportunity Green and Director of the SASHA Coalition Moderator: Todd Siena, Founder & CEO, Block Aero Technologies |
Stream: Lindbergh 1/2 – Looking to the Future
14.30 – 15.15 | Session 9 (Panel): Developing the aircraft of the future for a net zero world
New technology aircraft are under development that can revolutionize the short-haul passenger market within the next decade, bringing the prospect of near zero-emission air travel. This session will look at the opportunities and challenges posed by hydrogen-electric, liquid hydrogen and electric propulsion.
